Getting started
- Install DroneVR+ from Google Play and open it once while your phone is online, so it can register with DJI.
- Turn on your remote controller and drone, and connect your phone — by USB cable, or to the controller’s Wi‑Fi for the Spark and Phantom 3 Standard/4K.
- Select your drone model from the list and tap Connect.
- Tap Fly, slide your phone into your headset, and take off.
DroneVR+ questions
Which drones does DroneVR+ support?
DroneVR+ flies the DJI drones on DJI’s previous developer kit: Mavic Pro, Mavic 2 Pro/Zoom, Mavic Mini, Mini 2, Mini SE, Mavic Air, Mavic Air 2, Air 2S, Spark, the Phantom 4 and Phantom 3 series, Phantom 2 Vision+ and Inspire 1 — plus the Ryze Tello.
For the DJI Mini 3 Pro and Mini 4 Pro, use DroneXR instead. The full list is on the compatibility page.
My drone does not connect to DroneVR+. What can I do?
On first start, your phone must be online so DroneVR+ can register with DJI. This is needed only once — again after a reinstall.
Drones connected by USB cable (Phantom 3 Advanced/Professional, Phantom 4 series, Mavic Pro, Mavic 2, Mavic Air, Mavic Mini, Inspire 1):
- Turn on the remote controller and the drone.
- Connect your phone to the remote controller with a USB cable.
- If Android asks which app to open, choose DroneVR+ — but don’t make it the default, or other DJI apps may stop working correctly.
- Open DroneVR+, select your drone model from the list and tap Connect.
- Still nothing? Unplug and reconnect the cable, and close other DJI apps running in the background. If that doesn’t help, restart the phone, drone and controller.
Drones connected by Wi‑Fi (Phantom 3 Standard/4K, Spark):
- Turn on the remote controller and the drone.
- Connect your phone to the Wi‑Fi network of the remote controller.
- Close other DJI apps completely (Settings → Apps → Force stop) — only one app can connect.
- Open DroneVR+, select your drone model and tap Connect.
- Still nothing? Turn your phone’s Wi‑Fi off and on again, or restart everything.
Mavic Pro: use the USB port at the bottom centre of the controller, and disconnect the short cable on the controller’s left side completely — otherwise the lower port stays inactive.
The DJI SDK activation fails. What can I do?
DroneVR+ uses DJI’s developer kit, which has to be activated once on each new phone. This needs an internet connection on first start; the status is shown below the Connect button.
If activation fails:
- Check that your phone is really online — open a web page in the browser.
- Some Wi‑Fi routers block activation even though browsing works. Switch Wi‑Fi off and try over mobile data.
- Be patient — activation can take up to five minutes.
- DJI’s activation servers may be down. Try again a little later.
What should I do if I lose the video connection?
Losing video can happen beyond the maximum range or with radio interference. Activate your drone’s Return to Home (RTH); the video normally recovers once the drone is back in range. Practise RTH a few times before you fly with a headset.
How do I start and land the drone?
On DJI drones, start the motors by pulling both sticks down and towards each other, then push the left stick up to take off.
To land, hover close to the ground, then pull and hold the left stick down. The drone lands and stops its motors; if they keep running, use the same stick movement as for starting them.
What does the head-up display (HUD) show?
- Top: the drone’s heading — and, once a home point is recorded, distance and direction to home.
- Left ladder: speed. Right ladder: altitude above the home point.
- Middle ladder: pitch and roll. On drones whose camera can turn, the crosshair shows the camera position relative to the drone.
- Bottom left: number of GPS satellites.
- Bottom middle: batteries — P phone, D drone, R remote controller.
- Bottom right: link quality from 0–100% — U uplink to the drone, D downlink from it.
How do I use spectator mode?
Spectator mode mirrors the video and HUD from your phone to a second phone, so a friend can watch your flight in their own headset.
- Put both phones on the same Wi‑Fi — for example a hotspot on your phone, or the controller’s Wi‑Fi if it has one.
- Connect DroneVR+ on your phone to the drone as usual.
- On the second phone, start DroneVR+, choose Spectator and tap Connect.
Can I run DroneVR+ and a DJI app at the same time?
It is not recommended. DroneVR+ can switch between foreground and background, but with some drones — such as the Mavic Mini — we have seen unstable video when another DJI app runs alongside.
How do I fly a Ryze Tello with DroneVR+?
The Tello has no remote controller of its own, so you need a game controller connected to your phone by Bluetooth or OTG cable, with two sticks and several buttons — a PlayStation 4 controller works well.
- Turn on the Tello and connect your phone to its Wi‑Fi network.
- Open DroneVR+, choose Tello and tap Connect.
- Tap Fly to open the video view.
- The first time, map your controller: open settings (the gear icon) → Control, select a drone function, then press the button or move the stick you want for it. Move a stick the opposite way to reverse it.
- Press the button you assigned to Takeoff/Land to take off, and again to land.
